In the heart of one of the fastest-growing regions of the country stands a glass-and-steel marvel that’s both a high-end tech medical campus and a world-class center for personalized patient care.
The new Ohio State University Hospital was put to the test on a single pivotal day when 425 patients were moved into the new University Hospital in under eight hours. The move is one of the largest single-facility hospital openings in the U.S. this year.
Planning and construction of the 26-story tower took over a decade. And then, the “minute-by-minute” move-in plan was developed over an entire year to ensure clinical continuity and a seamless transition to the future of treatment.
Key features of the new facility include:
- 820 Smart Rooms: Private rooms featuring 75-inch digital walls that allow patients to connect virtually with physicians, pharmacists, and family, fostering a new era of collaborative healing.
- Advanced Surgical Suites: 24 operating rooms equipped with color-tunable lighting to enhance precision and reduce patient recovery times.
- Integrated Care: By housing critical services—including the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital—under one roof, the facility eliminates patient transport between buildings, streamlining emergency and ICU care.
The patient transfer drew observers from six major U.S. health systems. It is the largest construction project in the university’s history.
